Controlled Growth of Monodisperse Au-Pd Nanoicosahedra with Alloy or Core-Shell Morphologies

Scientific Achievement

Controlled growth of 20-sided Au-Pd nanoicosahedral particles exhibiting 2X enhanced catalytic activity.

Significance and Impact

The Au-Pd core-shell icosahedra with terraced Pd-rich shells and plasmonic Au-rich cores synergistically enhance the catalytic performance in ethanol electro-oxidation and nitrophenol reduction.

Research Details

– A one-step aqueous method for the controlled growth of sub-20 nm alloy and core-shell Au-Pd icosahedra.

– Icosahedra of either Au-Pd alloys or Au-Pd cores with ultrathin terraced Pd-shells were achieved via swapping of the halide ions [Br-]/[Cl-] during growth.

– The core-shell morphology was resolved using high X-ray collection efficient STEM-EDS.
