David, leader of the Materials Joining and Nondestructive Testing Group in the Metals and Ceramics Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory, was presented the award in recognition of outstanding achievements in fundamental research in welding science and technology and its allied areas.
He is task leader of ORNL's Basic Energy Sciences Welding Science program. His focus areas are solidification behavior of welds, welding of intermetallic alloys, phase stability, process modeling and residual stresses in weldments.
David's current interests include solidification behavior of welds, welding of intermetallic alloys, phase stability, process modeling and residual stresses in weldments.
David is a fellow of the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society, American Welding Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and ASM International. He is a former general chairman of the International Conference on Trends in Welding Research and is editor-in-chief of the journal Science and Technology of Welding and Joining.
He holds adjunct professorships at the University of Pittsburgh and the Colorado School of Mines and is a visiting professor at Coventry University in the United Kingdom.
David has contributed to more than 250 papers in the fields of solidification and welding metallurgy and is editor of seven international conference proceedings. He serves on several national committees of professional societies and industrial advisory boards.
David earned bachelor's and master's degrees in metallurgical engineering from the Indian Institute of Science and a doctorate in metallurgical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh.
He is a resident of West Knoxville.
