March 28, 2008 — Directors of two new divisions have been named at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
Johney Boyd Green Jr. has been named director for the Energy and Transportation Science Division while Ken Tobin Jr. has been named director of the Measurement Science and Systems Engineering Division.
Both divisions were part of the former Engineering Science and Technology Division.
Green is the first black director of an ORNL science and technology division. He joined ORNL in 1995 and has led ORNL's Fuels, Engines and Emissions Research group since 2003. His division will undertake research and development in a variety of energy and transportation areas including building and industrial energy efficiency, electrical power research, fuels, engine and vehicle research and transportation analysis.
Green received his master's and doctorate degrees in mechanical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Memphis.
Tobin oversees ORNL's focus on measurement science associated with electronics, sensors, signals, patterns, informatics and communications. The division provides science and engineering research capabilities to realize practical solutions to complex science and technology issues in energy, security, defense and human health.
Tobin, who joined ORNL in 1987, received his bachelor's degree in physics and a master's degree in nuclear engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and his doctorate in nuclear engineering from the University of Virginia. He was named a UT-Battelle corporate fellow in 2003 for his contributions to the field of applied computer vision research.
ORNL is managed by UT-Battelle for the Department of Energy.
