This is the fifth consecutive year that Radon Research Notes, a publication of DOE's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), has won an award in the annual STC competition.
Begun in 1990, Radon Research Notes has been used as a vehicle to foster the exchange of information within the radon research community and to provide scientific input into the development of radon policy. Ironically, with funding for the radon program being drastically cut, the award-winning newsletter will soon be dropped. The last edition is expected to be published by the end of the summer.
In issuing the award, judges noted that the newsletter's writing is "clear and direct," "logically organized and complete." They also noted that Radon Research Notes employs a pleasing and straightforward design that is used effectively.
Gloria Caton and Tim Elledge of the Biomedical and Environmental Information Analysis Section of ORNL's Health Sciences Research Division are Radon Research Notes managing editor and technical writer/editor, respectively. Susan Rose, DOE's radon program manager, is the newsletter's sponsor.
ORNL, one of DOE's multiprogram national research and development facilities, is managed by Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corp.
