Dr. Moncton will report directly to Dr. Trivelpiece and will be responsible for all aspects of the SNS project. Dr. Moncton is currently the Associate Director responsible for the Advanced Photon Source at the Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) near Chicago. At Oak Ridge, he will remain an employee of ANL and will work under a loaned personnel agreement between the two laboratories.
Dr. Moncton's career has spanned areas of fundamental research to major facility construction. His early work included using both synchrotron and neutron sources for research and development. He has had extensive industrial experience at AT&T Bell Laboratories and Exxon Research Corporation. His most recent and relevant experience was at ANL, where he led the team that completed the Advanced Photon Source on schedule and under budget.
The SNS is a collaborative project involving ORNL and four other DOE National Laboratories (Argonne, Brookhaven, Lawrence Berkeley and Los Alamos). The SNS has received $130 million in funding in this fiscal year and approval from Congress to initiate Title 1 Design and construction activities, and it is included in the Administration's FY 2000 budget at the requested level of $214 million.
ORNL is a Department of Energy multiprogram research facility and is managed by Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corporation.
