Emergency response exercises to begin with Wednesday drill

Hundreds of participants will be involved in a large-scale emergency management exercise set for Wednesday, February 18, at the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

The February 18 exercise will involve a hypothetical scenario that results in the simulated release of hazardous material. This activity is a prelude to "Volunteer Response '98," an even larger full-participation exercise involving ORNL, scheduled for Wednesday, April 22.

Both the February and April exercises will require a coordinated, integrated response between local, state and federal emergency management personnel. The exercises are conducted to ensure that onsite employees, the public and the environment will be protected in the unlikely event of an emergency at ORNL.

Exercise participants will include the DOE Oak Ridge Operations Office; Lockheed Martin; the State of Tennessee; the City of Oak Ridge; Anderson, Knox, Loudon and Roane counties; and the American Red Cross.

Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corporation manages ORNL for DOE.
