He has been named a principal editor of The Journal of Materials Research, where he will serve on the board of editors. He was also appointed to the International Advisory Board of Editors for The Journal of the Korean Institute of Applied Conductivity and Cryogenics.
The Journal of Materials Research publishes papers about significant information impacting materials science. The Journal of the Korean Institute of Applied Superconductivity and Cryogenics is a leading South Korean journal in the field of superconductivity.
Goyal has co-authored more than 230 publications and conference publications. He has given three plenary talks, more than 75 invited presentations in national and international conferences and has published more than 30 invited papers and book chapters. He has received more than 1,000 citations from first and second author publications.
He is the lead inventor in the rolling-assisted-biaxially-textured substrates (RABiTS) process to fabricate high-performance superconducting wires and has 27 issued patents related to this process. The technology earned an R&D 100 Award in 1999 as one of the world's 100 top inventions that year, and is widely regarded as a promising method for fabrication of high-temperature superconducting wires.
Goyal was also named by Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Technical Review magazine as a top 100 inventor in 1999.
Recently named a Battelle distinguished inventor, Goyal also earned a 2001 Federal Laboratory Consortium Award and a 2001 Energy 100 Award. He was named ORNL's Inventor of the Year in 1999 for his "sustained accomplishments over a long period of time."
Goyal is a former member of the advisory board for the Materials Research Science and Engineering Center at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Since earning the R&D 100 Award, Goyal has served as a judge to determine winners of more recent R&D 100s.
He holds a doctorate in materials science and engineering from the University of Rochester. Goyal's wife, Sujata, is an architect with the architectural firm McCarty Holsaple Marty of Knoxville. They have a son and live in Knoxville.
