Kathy McCarthy, associate laboratory director for Fusion and Fission Energy and Science at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, has been elected fellow of the American Nuclear Society for her nationally and internationally recognized leadership in nuclear energy and fusion.
The award citation noted her leadership at ORNL as associate laboratory director and director of the US ITER Office, as well as her past positions.
“At Idaho National Laboratory, she took on several key leadership roles including revitalization of the Light Water Reactor Sustainability program and management of Fuel-Cycle and Nuclear Science and Engineering R&D. At Canadian Nuclear Laboratories, she initiated development of a reactor park for siting and demonstrating advanced reactor technology and led the R&D effort for advanced reactors,” the citation stated.
She was recognized during the society’s Annual Meeting Opening Plenary on June 14 by Hash Hashemian, chair of the American Nuclear Society Honors and Awards Committee and president of the AMS Corporation.
