Maxey was honored for conceiving a new method for obtaining high-resolution angular and linear displacement measurements. His method triples the amount of information provided by laser measurement systems used in precision manufacturing. It allows for tighter manufacturing tolerances with existing machine tools and is expected to lead to higher quality and lower cost in precision-manufactured products for automotive, electronic and military applications.
Maxey holds three patents and has written several technical publications in the optics and measurement fields. He is a member of the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers. Maxey received the Federal Laboratory Consortium Award of Merit for Excellence in Technology Transfer in 1997.
He is a graduate of the University of Tennessee with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. Maxey and his wife, Helene, are residents of Powell.
