The award is presented to the individual who has done the most to enhance the society's goal of advancing the science and technology of welding during the last five years.
David has been with ORNL since 1977, and is leader of the Materials Joining and Nondestructive Testing Group in the Metals and Ceramics Division. David developed the Basic Energy Sciences Welding Science Program at ORNL. His current interests are solidification behavior of welds, welding of intermetallic alloys, phase stability, process modeling and residual stresses in weldments.
A recipient of various awards from welding and scientific organizations, David is a Fellow of the American Welding Society, American Association for the Advancement of Science and American Society for Metals (ASM) International. He has served as general chairman of the International Conference on Trends in Welding Research.
David earned B.S and M.S. degrees in metallurgical engineering from the Indian Institute of Science, and a doctorate in metallurgical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh, where he holds an adjunct professorship. David holds additional adjunct professorships at Ohio State University and the Colorado School of Mines.
He is a resident of West Knoxville.
