The researchers were recognized for their paper, "Application of Single Crystals to Achieve Quantitative Understanding of Weld Microstructures," which appeared in the September 1995 issue of Materials Science & Technology.
David is leader of the Materials Joining and Nondestructive Testing Group in ORNL's Metals and Ceramics Division. He is responsible for ORNL's Basic Energy Sciences Welding Science program. He is also a Lockheed Martin Corporation corporate fellow.
David is the recipient of many achievement awards, including the Champion H. Mathewson award from the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society and the American Welding Society's Chavaler H. Jennings Memorial Award. He also is a three-time winner of the Jacquet-Lucas Gold Medal Award by the International Metallagraphic Society and ASM International.
David holds bachelor's and master's degrees in metallurgical engineering from the Indian Institute of Science. He earned a doctorate in metallurgical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh.
A member of the microscopy and microanalytical group of the Metals and Ceramics Division, Vitek joined ORNL in 1980 after working with the Metals Research Laboratory of the Olin Corp. Vitek previously won the Outstanding Paper Award from Acta Metallurgica. He received his doctorate in materials science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Boatner, a Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corporate Fellow, is a section head in the ORNL Solid State Division and leads the Novel Materials Group. He received bachelor's and master's degrees from Texas Tech University, and he earned his doctorate in physics and mathematics from Vanderbilt University.
Boatner is a Fellow of the American Physical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and ASM International. He has received numerous awards for his research, including IR-100 Awards in 1982 and 1985, an R&D-100 Award in 1996, the Federal Laboratory Consortium Award for Excellence in Technology Transfer in 1997, and the Jacquet-Lucas Gold Medal Award by the International Metallagraphic Society and ASM International in 1988.
Dr. Michel Rappaz is a professor in the Laboratory of Metallurgical Physics at the Ecole Polytechnique. He spent two years at ORNL in 1979-80 working with Boatner as a postdoctoral fellow of the Swiss National Fund for Scientific Research. Rappaz has returned to ORNL many times as a guest scientist and is one of the world's leading researchers in the field of solidification phenomena.
