ORNL employees learn about green technology alternatives

Personnel at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory learned about practical green technology alternatives during a lunchtime program.

ORNL's Frances Drake was one of the many coordinators of the event, which she hopes will enable her fellow co-workers to treat every day as Earth Day.

"During Earth Day, we make all of our employees aware of all of the different ways they can go about making less waste, doing more recycling and that sort of thing," Drake says. "As an extension of that, we asked a lot of the vendors here in East Tennessee and around Knoxville to come and share their products with the laboratory."

Mary Dean, another event coordinator, says practical souvenirs were given out, as well.

"We also did provide green reusable lunch bags in support of our continuing efforts to reduce plastic bags," Dean said. "On Earth Day, we actually exchanged plastic bags for reusable bags and now we're also providing reusable lunch bags so that people will hopefully bring those to work instead of a plastic bag."

ORNL is managed by UT-Battelle for the Department of Energy.
