ORNL researcher named to water resources team

Dr. Michael Sale, research staff member in the Environmental Sciences Division of the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), has been appointed to participate on a nationwide water resources study that will be submitted to the president of the United States and Congress within two years.

The study is entitled "Water Sector Assessment of the Potential Consequences of Climate Variability and Change" and is to be submitted by Jan. 1, 2000. Sale also is serving as general chairperson for a conference sponsored by the American Water Resources Association (AWRA) that will peer review the draft findings of the water sector assessment. Sale is an AWRA fellow.

Sale earned a bachelor's degree in zoology from the University of Michigan, a master's degree in aquatic ecology, and a doctorate in environmental engineering and science from the University of Illinois. He received a Lockheed Martin Significant Event Award for his work on the Lower Mokelumne River Project environmental impact statement in 1993.

He lives in Farragut with his wife, Janet Heidel Sale, and their three children.

ORNL, one of DOE's multiprogram national research and development facilities, is managed by Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corporation.
