Barhen will discuss progress of the Terminal Repeller Unconstrained Subenergy Tunneling (TRUST) global optimization algorithm used in seismic imaging. It is especially important in oil exploration, where accurate imaging is crucial. An article on Barhen's topic will appear next month in the journal Science.
Barhen is director of the Center for Engineering Systems Advanced Research (CESAR) at ORNL. He was head of the Nonlinear Science and Information Processing Group at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology from 1987 to 1984. He headed ORNL's Machine Intelligence Group from 1978 to 1987.
Barhen earned his doctor of science degree from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa in 1978.
He has received 12 NASA Awards for Technical Innovation and recently was honored by two NASA Major Monetary Awards for his contribution to the National Space Program. He has written more than 130 scientific papers and serves on the editorial boards of Neural Networks, Neural Processing Letters, Mathematical and Computer Modeling and Concurrency. He holds four U.S. patents in his field.
Barhen's research interests include neural networks; global optimization; signal processing algorithms for hyperspectral remote sensing; computational methods for seismic analysis and the development of time-parallel algorithms for solving partial differential equations on massively parallel systems.
He lives in Oak Ridge with his wife, Lily, and their two daughters.
