Cathy Swindeman, a researcher from the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), is serving on an interactive panel for The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society (TMS).
The panel, "Ask the Expert," provides the opportunity for those interested in pursuing materials science careers to ask questions and spotlights career profiles of the panelists. The panel is composed of young professionals working in the materials science field.
TMS is a materials and engineering professional society composed of 13,000 professional and student members, including metallurgical and materials engineers, scientists, researchers, educators and administrators, from more than 70 countries.
In addition to her work with TMS, she serves on national level committees of American Society of Metals International and The Thermal Spray Society.
Swindeman's career began in 1991 at the Y-12 Defense and Manufacturing Plant, where she worked on casting and metalworking of depleted uranium and refractory metals. Since 1995, she has worked for ORNL's Engineering Technology Division and the Coating, Plating and Finishing Center of Oak Ridge Centers for Manufacturing Technology (ORCMT) . Currently, her research focuses on research and development of thermally sprayed materials.
Swindeman received bachelor's and master's degrees in metallurgical engineering from the University of Tennessee.
ORNL, one of DOE's multiprogram national research and development facilities, is managed by Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corporation.
