The entry, titled "Martensitic Transformation in an Austenitic Stainless Steel Single Crystal," won in the color microscopy category. Metallography is the study of the structure of metals and alloys by various methods.
Working on the project were Lynn Boatner, a Lockheed Martin Energy Systems corporate fellow in the Solid State Division; Stan David, a corporate fellow in the Metals and Ceramics Division; Janie Gardner, an engineering technologist in the Metals and Ceramics Division; and Allison Baldwin of the Graphic Arts Department.
Research support for the project was provided by NASA's Microgravity Science and Applications Division and DOE's Division of Materials Sciences of the Office of Basic Energy Sciences.
The ORNL entry will be part of a traveling exhibit that will tour various U.S. research laboratories and universities during a one-year period.
ORNL, one of DOE's multiprogram national research and development facilities, is managed by Lockheed Martin Energy Systems, which also manages the Oak Ridge K-25 Site and the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant.
