ORNL's Chi to receive Burton microscopy medal

OAK RIDGE, Tenn., May 5, 2016 – Miaofang Chi, a researcher at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory, has received the Microscopy Society of America's Burton Medal, which is awarded annually to an early career scientist.

Chi is a research staff member at the Center for Nanophase Materials Sciences at ORNL. She has extensive research experience developing electron microscopy techniques for energy materials, including battery materials and fuel cell catalysts. Her current research focuses on understanding atomic-level mass and electron transport behavior.

Chi earned her doctorate in materials science and engineering from the University of California, Davis. Before joining ORNL's microscopy group in 2008, she was a visiting scholar at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and a graduate research fellow at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. She has authored numerous publications in high-impact journals in the fields of microscopy and materials science.

In 2015, Chi received the ORNL Director’s Award for Outstanding Individual Accomplishment in Science and Technology as well as ORNL’s Early Career Research Award.

The Microscopy Society's Burton Medal annually honors distinguished contributions to the field of microscopy and microanalysis by a scientist who is less than 40 years of age.

UT-Battelle manages ORNL for the Department of Energy's Office of Science. The Office of Science is the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States, and is working to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time.
