ORNL's Dean to chair FRIB scientific advisory committee

OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Oct. 21, 2014 – David Jarvis Dean of the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory has been invited to chair the scientific advisory committee for the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB).

Dean will provide guidance and advice to FRIB Laboratory Director Konrad Gelbke and work closely with associates in planning the facility's scientific agenda.  Construction on FRIB began earlier this year at Michigan State University. The new nuclear science facility has an expected completion date in late 2020.

Dean has served on various advisory committees including the DOE/National Science Foundation Nuclear Science Advisory Committee, the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory Program Advisory Committee and the NERSC Users Group Executive Committee. With a background in computational physics and nuclear theory, he has authored over 150 publications. Dean received his doctorate from Vanderbilt University in 1991, and was a Post-doctoral Fellow at Caltech before joining the Lab in 1995.
