Nick Peters leads the Quantum Information Science Section in the Computational Sciences and Engineering Division.

In this role, Nick oversees more than 30 researchers across three groups dedicated to advancing quantum computing, networking, and sensing. Substantial institutional investments in equipment and facilities, as well as recent increases in federal funding from the Department of Energy and other agencies, have positioned the section for rapid growth and success.

Nick joined ORNL in 2015 as a strategic hire and previously led the Quantum Information Science Group. He is also a joint faculty member of the University of Tennessee’s Bredesen Center. His research interests and focus areas include quantum entanglement, quantum computing, quantum sensing, quantum communications and networking, quantum cybersecurity, quantum optics, and data analysis.

“I have been really fortunate to have many excellent mentors through the years, even if I didn’t know I was being mentored at the time," said Peters. "Listen carefully to your mentors and be intentional."

In his spare time, Nick enjoys spending time with his four boys and two girls, and he volunteers locally as an assistant Scoutmaster, assistant Cubmaster, and den leader in Boy Scouts of America programs.
