Shirley named director of Office of Safety and Health Protection

Ann M. Shirley has been appointed director of the Office of Safety and Health Protection at the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

In this capacity, Shirley is responsible for ensuring the health and safety of all individuals assigned to laboratory activities.

Shirley joined ORNL's Industrial Hygiene Section in 1990. She has participated in the Health Hazard Information Module project and has been OSHA program manager. Previously, she served as an industrial hygiene specialist at Crum & Forster Commercial Insurance Company. She is a member of American Industrial Hygiene Association and has been the recipient of the Martin Marietta Energy Systems award for Operational Support.

Shirley received her bachelor's degree in biology with a minor in chemistry from Pembroke State University. She received a master's degree in public health from the University of Tennessee and a master's degree in education from Clemson University.

She and her son, Stephen, live in Knoxville.

ORNL, one of DOE's multiprogram national research and development facilities, is managed by Martin Marietta Energy Systems, a Lockheed Martin company, which also manages the Oak Ridge K-25 Site and the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant.
