Summitt encourages ORNL employees to back United Way

Speaking to hundreds of UT-Battelle employees at a United Way campaign rally, University of Tennessee Lady Vols Basketball Coach Pat Summitt said she has used United Way to motivate her team in ways that go beyond winning on the basketball court - even for a national champion.

"What really helped me was to travel to a lot of the agencies and to see all the kids and all the adults given a chance because of United Way and the resources that so many people give," Summitt told those in attendance. "I even took our team to some of the agencies."

Summitt asked UT-Battelle employees to support United Way with the same type of enthusiasm fans show at Tennessee's Thompson-Boling Arena.

"I want to encourage you all to come watch us this year and support our team," Summitt said. "First and foremost, let's support the United Way team."

UT-Battelle is the largest corporate contributor to United Way in East Tennessee with a 2008 campaign goal of $875,000.

ORNL is managed by UT-Battelle for the Department of Energy.
