OAK RIDGE, Tenn., January 26, 2017 – Kinga Unocic, researcher at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, has received the 2017 Young Leaders International Scholar Award from The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society.
Unocic is a materials scientist in the Microscopy and Corrosion Science and Technology group and has contributed to the ORNL Bioenergy Technologies Program. Her current research uses transmission electron microscopy methods to study the performance and reliability of materials under extreme conditions, investigate the structure of materials processed by additive manufacturing and accelerate catalyst synthesis and development for bioenergy technology.
The TMS Young Leaders International Scholar Award recognizes an early-career individual for their potential as a future leader in the society and the materials and engineering community at large. TMS honored Unocic for her research accomplishments, society committee leadership, symposia organization and mentoring activities.
Unocic also won the Young Leaders Professional Development Award from the TMS Structural Materials Division in 2010 and a TMS Diversity Summit travel grant from the Women in Materials Science and Engineering Committee in 2014. She will receive the award at the TMS Annual Meeting in San Diego and will present her research at the 2017 JIM Spring Annual Meeting in Tokyo.
