Materials for Advanced Manufacturing

Vision

Pioneer the understanding of metastable phase transformations in materials processed via advanced manufacturing.

Mission

Lead research in phase transformation kinetics of materials under non-equilibrium processing conditions via multi-length scale advanced characterization techniques.

R&D Scope

The Materials for Advanced Manufacturing Group’s focus is to understand the metastable phase transformation pathways in materials manufactured via additive and advanced manufacturing. We work on functional and structural materials as it pertains to their process-structure-property relationships when fabricated by different techniques. Developing a detailed understanding enables us to tailor materials specific to the extreme thermomechanical cycles encountered in different additive manufacturing technologies such as laser powder bed fusion, and wire arc directed energy deposition.

Core Competencies

  • Leveraging in-situ neutron and x-ray diffraction to understand phase transformation pathways in AM
  • Coupling data mining and machine learning to enable alloy discovery for AM
  • Multi-length scale materials characterization
