Recapping a Successful Month of SCALE Training at ORNL, March 2024

Four hands-on SCALE training courses were held at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) February 26–March 22. A total of 49 participants representing industry, national laboratories, government agencies, and academia gathered to further familiarize themselves with the depth and breadth of SCALE’s capabilities. The following courses were offered.

Polaris/PARCS Course Attendees
Polaris/PARCS for LWR Core Analysis Course Attendees

Polaris/PARCS for LWR Core Analysis  This training course focused on using the SCALE/Polaris lattice physics code for generating nuclear data for use in the PARCS nodal core simulator. Instructors: Ugur Mertyurek, Matt Jessee, Bk Jeon (ORNL), Andy Bielen (U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission), and Andy Ward (University of Michigan).

SCALE Criticality Safety and Radiation Shielding Course Attendees

SCALE Criticality Safety Calculations – In this class, ORNL instructors provided a foundation on sensitivity and uncertainty analysis and applied these methods to criticality safety validation applications, as well as instruction on the use of Sampler for uncertainty quantification. Instructors: B.J. Marshall, Travis Greene, Shane Hart, Jordan McDonnell, Ugur Mertyurek, and Alex Shaw.

ORIGEN Standalone Fuel Depletion, Activation, and Source Term Analysis Course Attendees
ORIGEN Standalone Fuel Depletion, Activation, and Source Term Analysis Course Attendees

ORIGEN Standalone Fuel Depletion, Activation, and Source Term Analysis – This was a hands-on training course that covered the use of ORIGEN for depletion and decay analysis, nuclide inventories, decay heat, and radiation emissions and spectra calculations. Instructors: Germina Ilas, Steve Skutnik, Bk Jeon, Ugur Mertyurek, and Rob Lefebvre.

Descriptions for the courses listed above, as well as all training courses, are provided on the training page of the SCALE website: https://www.ornl.gov/content/training-person-ornl.  Training is presented by developers and expert users from the SCALE Team. These courses include reviews of theory as well as descriptions of capabilities and software limitations. Hands-on exercises at varying levels of complexity are included.

All SCALE training course attendees must be licensed for the SCALE version used in the training. If you are not a licensed user of SCALE and would like to order the software, please visit https://www.ornl.gov/content/how-order-scale. Please request the software at least two months prior to the start of the training course you would like to attend.

The SCALE Team can provide direct virtual support or a visit to your site to present customized, hands‑on courses to share the expertise needed to solve challenging application scenarios. Reach out to us at scalehelp@ornl.gov for more information.
