The cascade of temperature and field-driven transitions in LuFe<2/>O<4/> was investigated byMNossbauer and optical spectroscopies, magnetization, and x-ray scattering. A correlation of Fe2+ Fe3+ charge transfer excitations with the 320 K phase transition below which uperstructure reflections appear confirms its association with gradual charge carrier freezing. Fe2+ on-site excitations are sensitive to the 175 K magnetic transition, which Bragg splitting and large magneto optical contrast suggest involes a monoclinic distortion that can be driven by both temperature and magnetic field.
