In their landmark paper published in 1948, Stokes and Robinson1 proposed a modified form of the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller 2 adsorption isotherm to explain the water activity behavior of various 1:1 and 2:1 concentrated aqueous electrolytes. Their pioneering idea of viewing such solutions as an irregular ionic lattice structure inspired much of the authors work (with co-researcher, Jerry Braunstein) from the mid 1980s to the present time. This paper, written in celebration of Prof. Stokes 90th birthday anniversary briefly describes the authors contribution towards further development of the theory, its capabilities, future directions.
