In the last couple of decades many researchers have realized that major efficiency gains may be made in remote operations if the transition can be made from pure teleoperation to systems augmented with robotic assists. These telerobotic systems have been demonstrated numerous times in academic and national laboratories around the world. However, in the real world of remote operations, almost all activities are still executed using pure teleoperation. This paper focuses on the issues related to why this is true and attempts to outline how researchers may address some of these issues.
