A novel poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) was synthesized through a simple one-pot reaction and can serve as a facile carbon precursor. The unique features of this poly(ionic liquid) include (1) no additional initiator is required; (2) anion can be readily metathesized to tune the chemical properties, and to regulate the micropore size of the carbonaceous materials. Carbonaceous materials derived the as synthesized PIL (Cl- based) has a low surface area of 47 m2/g. However, by replacing Cl- with a bulky TFSI-, the obtained carbonaceous materials exhibit a high surface area of 595 m2/g, whileas replacing Cl− with N(CN)2− results in reduced surface area of 30 m2/g
