Abstract
Tristructural-isotropic (TRISO) particle fuel is an advanced, mature technology for nuclear energy generation. Inherent containment of radionuclides within the fuel obviates the need for expensive reactor containment buildings; however, this benefit comes at the cost of increased complexity in fabrication relative to other nuclear fuel forms. In addition, rigorous fuel characterization and quality control efforts are required to ensure that the credited radionuclide containment within the fuel is realized.
