The paper describes the fabrication of a half wave plate where the
retardation in one polarization is achieved through tailoring the evanescent field
coupling between two metal layers with arrays of subwavelength apertures. The
main advantages of this design include versatility in the operational wavelength,
compactness and potential integration with other optical components, as well as the
possibility of dynamical control of the polarization of the transmitted light through
lateral nanomechanical motion between the two metal layers.
