The neutronics analysis for the Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Spallation Neutron Source second target station monolith conceptual design was performed entirely with the Monte Carlo method. It has been demonstrated that even though the monolith provides approximately peta-scale attenuation of the dose rates, Monte Carlo simulations are within reach of computing capabilities of relatively inexpensive Linux clusters. Several monolith configurations achieved or exceeded design requirements and provide basis for the final design.
