The Global Positioning System (GPS) is critical to the real-time synchronized sampling of phasor measurement units (PMUs). Unfortunately, GPS signals are occasionally unstable due to several factors such as weak satellite signal and GPS spoofing, thereby leaving the PMU with a degraded sampling performance. In this letter, a novel Pulsar-calibrated Timing Source (PTS) is proposed as the alternative timing source for synchronized sampling. The PTS can generate the timing signal with a 1 μs drift error within 91 holdover minutes to ensure continuity of sampling accuracy. Experimental tests are conducted and the results reveal the reliability and accuracy of the PTS for PMU synchronization.
