Using a simple two-step reaction process, we have
demonstrated the synthesis of large-area ZnGa2O4,
ZnGa2O4:Mn2+, and ZnGa2O4:Cr3+ nanowire arrays which,
respectively, exhibit bright blue, green, and red luminescence
under UV light irradiation. The realization of three primary colors
from one host material suggests that full color display based on
ZnGa2O4 nanowires might be achievable. These luminescent
nanowires could also be used in solid-state lighting as well as
radiation detection. The cathodoluminescence properties of the
ZnGa2O4 nanowires will be studied in future research.
