The industry standard for lime recovery kiln calcining zone refractories is 60% or 70% alumina brick. Rapid unexpected refractory wear in lime recovery kilns has often been attributed to excess alkali carryover in the lime kiln feed. Recent laboratory work attributes refractory wear to overheating and the lime charge fluxing the refractory. This paper corroborates this laboratory work with some case history post-mortem examinations of bricks removed from rotary lime kiln linings. The paper concludes with methods to manage refractory wear, including kiln burner performance.
