We have demonstrated that the dispersion of uniform silica particles (200 nm) in a standard battery electrolyte (1.2M LiPF6 EC/DMC) produces a shear thickening electrolyte that stiffens into a solid barrier during the application of an external force. This barrier prevents the electrodes from shorting during an impact reducing the risk of fire or catastrophic safety events. More importantly, we have demonstrated the ability to cycle NMC:graphite cells over 200 cycles with no loss of capacity after the 2nd cycle (4.2 V; C/3).
