North Carolina State University’s (NCSU's) College of Engineering recognized Alan Icenhour, associate laboratory director for the Nuclear Science and Engineering Directorate (NSED), as a Distinguished Engineering Alumnus.

The award was established to honor engineering graduates who have been recognized for outstanding achievements in planning and direction of engineering work; fostering professional development of young engineers; contributing to knowledge in the field of engineering; or bringing, in other ways, distinction to NCSU through engineering achievement.

Icenhour—who earned his bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering from NCSU in 1986 and chairs NCSU’s Department of Nuclear Engineering’s Advisory Committee—was cited for “his outstanding leadership in the engineering community and support of the College and its students” during the Alumni Weekend’s November 3–5 events.

In addition to his current role as associate laboratory director of NSED, Icenhour was elected as a Fellow of the American Nuclear Society in 2016 and has more than 30 years of experience in nuclear reactor operations and research and development on topics such as enrichment, radiochemical processing, radioisotope production and applications, nuclear fuels, radiation effects on materials, radioactive waste management, and nuclear security. He was a commissioned officer in the US Navy on a nuclear-powered submarine. After leaving active duty, he continued his service with the Navy as a reservist, retiring in 2010 at the rank of captain.
