Fred A Sudler

Chief Operating Officer

Fred Sudler became the first Chief Operating Officer (COO) for ORNL’s Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate in May 2021.  In this position, he provides the operational leadership and direction needed to support the associate laboratory director in meeting the directorate’s objectives while maintaining excellence in research operations.  In his role as COO, he has been charged with ensuring directorate operations are in alignment with mission objectives and are compliant, efficient, and effective, as well as leading the development and implementation of laboratory initiatives and actions needed to support the deputy for operations to continuously improve operational performance and reliability.

Prior to joining ORNL, Fred served as the Associate Vice President of Information Technology and Associate Chief Information Officer at Michigan State University (MSU).  In these roles, Fred oversaw MSU’s IT strategic planning, cyberinfrastructure research support, the integration of distributed units, and the daily operations of MSU IT, a department of over 700 IT professionals with an operating budget of over $60 million.  Fred also served as the Chief Operations Officer at MSU where he provided organizational leadership for MSU IT’s Project Management Office, Divisional Budget Office, Human Resources, Communications, Enterprise Architecture, Governance Committees, and Business Analysis.  Prior to joining MSU, Fred served as Director of Enterprise Systems at the University of North Florida, as well as Assistant Dean for Technology in the Coggin College of Business.

Fred holds a bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Science and a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of North Florida.  Prior to his roles in higher education, Fred was a Technology Manager at Price Waterhouse in Jacksonville, Florida and served honorably in the U.S. Navy stationed in Mayport, Florida.
