R&D Associate - Nuclear Operations & Licensing

Dr. Hamdi Alalaween joined Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Dec. 2022 as an R&D Associate in the Nuclear Operations & Licensing Group. Prior to his current role, he held the position of acting director of Nuclear Project Development at the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission (JAEC).  He also led the Innovative Nuclear Fuel Research section, the SMR section, and the Large NPP and Localization of Nuclear Technology sections during his tenure at JAEC.

Hamdi’s research interests include all aspects of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) International Project on Innovative Nuclear Reactors and Fuel Cycles (INPRO) methodology, which includes: energy sustainability, energy planning, nuclear program infrastructure, Nuclear Energy Systems Assessment (NESA), nuclear Fuel Cycle (FC), Radioactive Waste (RAW) management, and Deep Geological Repository (DGR).

Hamdi has a thorough track record of experience through participation in extensive collaboration and communications with a range of stakeholders, including reactor technology vendors, domestic and international institutions, and governmental agencies. Throughout his career, he has made significant contributions by conducting feasibility studies for the NPP project in Jordan and the assessment of SMR innovative technologies, by performing a comprehensive study of RAW management options, and examining the implications of Jordan’s adoption of a dual track approach for RAW management and disposal policy.  Hamdi also assisted in the development of the national requirements and Bid Invitation Specifications (BIS) for the NPP project. Internationally, he participated in significant IAEA consultancy, technical meetings, and expert missions; his expertise was recognized, and he was invited to assist in finalizing the IAEA publication on methodologies for Nuclear Energy Cost Estimations and Analysis.

Hamdi has over 10 years of practical and academic experience in the nuclear field in Jordan, Russia and currently the United States in diverse nuclear industry fields. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Nuclear Engineering from National Research Nuclear University, MEPHI in Moscow. He earned his master’s degree in physics (with a minor in material science) from Al-Balqa Applied University in Jordan, and a bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of Jordan.
