Group Leader, REDC Hot Cell Operations

Joshua Schmidlin is the group leader for the REDC Hot Cell Operations group within the Isotope Processing & Manufacturing Division.  A 13-year ORNL employee, Josh started at ORNL as an undergraduate intern and transitioned to a staff position following graduation.

He spent over five years as a Development Engineer in the Nuclear Fuel Materials Group supporting fuels and materials research at two of ORNL’s hot cell facilities. Then he went on to serve five years as the Technical Laboratory Manager for the Low Activation Materials Development & Analysis Laboratory (LAMDA) in the Materials Science & Technology Division, which supports the advanced characterization of irradiated materials. From 2020 to 2023, he has served as operations group leader for the Radioisotope Development Laboratory (Building 3047) supporting the DOE Isotope Program.  Since 2023, he has served as the group leader for the REDC Hot Cell Operations Group in building 7920.

Josh has a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Technology from East Tennessee State University and a Master of Science degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
