Dr. Fan got his doctoral degree in Geographic Information Science and master’s degree in Computer Science from University of Iowa. He has extensive experience in applying big spatiotemporal data analytics for public health, natural disaster, and human dynamics modeling. His main research interests are big spatiotemporal data analytic and visualizationgeospatial semantic modeling, and human activity and mobility pattern modeling. His current research focus on POI-based multi-scale global land use model and geospatial semantic ontology for POI data conflation in PlanetSense project. Before joining ORNL, he was an assistant research professor at University of Maryland, College Park, where he taught courses on GIS programming, advanced spatial analytics, and web mapping.
