Geospatial Modeler

Justin Epting is a Geospatial Modeler in the Human Geography Group. His primary responsibilities are supporting development of Landscan gridded population products. This includes researching and updating population estimates, the development of GIS tools for automating data processing and the development of semi-automated tools for product review and quality control. Justin is also working with colleagues to develop machine learning tools for building height estimation. 

Prior to joining ORNL in 2022, Justin spent twenty years utilizing geospatial technology to support biological conservation, natural resources management and post-wildland fire hazard mitigation, working for federal and state land managers, the California Geological Survey and two environmental organizations. 

Justin holds an M.S. in Natural Resources Management from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks and a B.S. in Ecology from Cal Poly State University.
