Layla C Marshall

Protection Systems Engineer

Layla is currently a Protection Systems Engineer in the Research Accelerator Division at Spallation Neutron Source. Layla joined ORNL in early 2021 as an electrical, instrumentation and controls engineer in the Enrichment Systems Engineering section of ISED’s Enrichment Science and Engineering division, where her primary focus was on programmable logic controller (PLC) and human-machine interface (HMI) programming and Software Quality Assurance (SQA) documentation.

Prior to coming to ORNL, Layla worked as an electronics engineer with Green Bank Observatory in West Virginia and as a hardware design and test engineer with Siemens Industry.

In 2021, Layla was elevated to the grade of senior member of the Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Senior members of IEEE are those who have worked in a relevant field for at least 10 years and have made significant contributions to the profession. Fewer than 10 percent of IEEE’s more than 400,000 members attain senior status.

Layla holds a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology and a Master of Engineering degree in acoustics from the Pennsylvania State University. She hikes, runs, volunteers regularly with regional libraries and Concord United Methodist Church, and plays oboe, piano, and saxophone in church and community ensembles.
