HFIR Operations Engineer

Matt has been working with ORNL since 2009.  He began his career as a Nuclear Reactor Controller at the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) where he ultimately qualified as a Senior Reactor Operator.  In July of 2021, he transitioned to the Nuclear Safety & Experiment Analysis Group to work as a Nuclear Safety Analyst.  As a safety analyst, he ensured any procedural or physical changes to the HFIR systems are bounded by the existing safety documents or are approved by DOE.  As a Nuclear Safety Analyst, he was also responsible for coordinating the Safety Related Equipment List and was a member of the Safety Analysis Report for Packaging (SARP) team supporting fresh fuel packaging recertification by the NRC.  In December of 2023, Matt transitioned back into HFIR operations as an Operations Engineer which supports the daily activities of the HFIR operations group including managing shipments of fissile materials.  He received a BS in Nuclear Engineering Technology from Thomas Edison State College in 2008 and a MS in Engineering Management from Penn State in 2016.  He brings prior professional experience as an 8 year veteran of the US Navy as a submarine nuclear reactor operator and electronics technician. Outside work, Matt is interested in motorcycling, camping, and spending quality time with his family.  He is involved in volunteering in his church, is an active Freemason in Avery Lodge #593, and is a member of Blount County Memorial VFW Post #5154.
