Ross Wang

Group Leader, Applied Research for Mobility Systems

Dr. Chieh (Ross) Wang is an R&D Staff Member and the Group Leader in the Applied Research for Mobility Systems (ARMS) Group at ORNL.  His research revolves around utilizing emerging sensing and computational technologies for transportation data collection, analysis, visualization, modeling, simulation, and application.  His recent research focuses on the modeling and simulation of mobility (i.e., vehicle and traffic) systems with application areas including connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs) and smart cities.  He currently leads research teams (as a PI or a co-PI) working on DOE projects with $10+ million awarded funding.  He is also one of the key researchers of USDOT's national transportation data programs, including the National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) and the Freight Analysis Framework (FAF).  He is the Project Manager and one of the key developers for the NHTS website (https://nhts.ornl.gov), for which he is advancing data analysis and visualization techniques in the form of web-based tools.

Outside of research, Dr. Wang has been actively serving the transportation community in various leadership roles. He is a Handling Editor for the Transportation Research Record, the Journal of the Transportation Research Board (TRB). He has been a co-chair of 3 TRB young members subcommittees, a member of 3 TRB committees and 2 TRB sections, the communication coordinator of 2 TRB committees, and the paper review coordinator of 2 TRB committees.  Dr. Wang is the co-founder and an organizer of the Three-Minute Thesis Workshop at TRB Annual Meetings.  He has also served as a member of the 21st Century Truck Partnership Data and Analytics Working Group and a member of the TennSMART Technical Advisory Committee.

Dr. Wang received his Ph.D. degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology and his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Civil Engineering from the National Taiwan University.
