Vivek A Sujan

Distinguished Research Staff

Dr. Vivek Sujan has over 20 years of experience in developing and commercializing advanced powertrain, vehicle systems, and system-of-system technologies focused on automation, reducing emissions and decarbonization of commercial vehicles. His work is focused on Hydrogen and Electrification Power Systems for On-/Off-Highway and intermodal applications. He brings extensive expertise in electromechanical controls, systems engineering and integration, electrified components, and systems architectures. He is currently advancing decarbonization research of commercial vehicles and supporting ecosystems at the National Transportation Research Center (NTRC), Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Prior to this, he had been with Cummins Inc. for nearly 18 years, where he was the Senior Technical Director leading broad cross-functional teams on Advanced Technology Planning and Concept Development for the New Power Business Unit (NPBU, Cummins). This included both North America and Global markets.  At Cummins, he has also held several positions within the Engine Business Unit and Research & Technology Department. Prior to working at Cummins, Dr. Sujan worked as a Post-Doctoral Research Engineer at MIT/JPL-NASA for about 2 years, developing advanced control architectures for robotic systems in terrestrial and extra-terrestrial activities. Dr. Sujan received his B.S. degrees in Physics, Mathematics (1995) and Mechanical Engineering (1996) from CalTech, M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering (1998), and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering/Control Systems (2002) from MIT. He has over 65 internationally published papers and over 240 patents granted in the fields of Vehicles and Eco-Systems, Diesel engines, System Dynamics, Powertrains, Automation, and Controls.
