Sample Environment Engineer

Robby came to ORNL in 2008 as an engineer on the Instrument Design team. Highlights include serving as the CAM and lead engineer for beamline 1a USANS during the SINGII MIE construction project (until 2013). After spending two years (2013-2015) in France at the International Thermonuclear Reactor (ITER) project he returned to the lab as a senior engineer in the Fusion and Materials for Nuclear Systems Division working on various projects including the Material Plasma Exposure eXperiment (MPEX). In 2020 Robby returned to SNS to become a Sample Environment Engineer in the Neutron Scattering Division.

Robby's experience spans from accelerator components, cryomodules, opto-mechanical devices, neutron scattering instrument systems (optics, shielding, infrastructure, etc.), various components for fusion devices, and pressure vessels.

He has a BS in Mechanical Engineering and Master of Engineering degree from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA as well as a 4yr Sheetmetal Mechanic apprenticeship at Newport News Shipbuilding.

Robby is also a licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Virginia.
