Dr. Yaping Xu earned his Ph.D. degree in geography from Louisiana State University in 2019. He held the position of postdoctoral research associate at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, working closely with Dr. Neal Stewart and Dr. Reggie Millwood. Within this role, he spearheaded research on unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote sensing and machine learning, with a specific focus on switchgrass phenotyping and traits modeling for sustainable biofuel feedstock breeding. Dr. Xu's project as an Early Career Fellow with the Center for Bioenergy Innovation at Oak Ridge National Lab entails collaborating with Dr. Stan Martin to automate his UAV data analysis pipeline developed for switchgrass phenotyping and traits modeling.

Starting from August 2023, Dr. Xu joined Sam Houston State University as an assistant professor of remote sensing with Environmental and Geosciences, focusing on the applications of UAV remote sensing, machine learning, and GIS for agriculture and agro-ecosystem modeling.

Dr. Xu's research interests span a wide range of areas, including the application of image analysis, machine learning, and remote sensing in soil moisture mapping, plant/crop phenotyping, agro-ecosystem modeling, coupled human-environmental systems, as well as the spatio-temporal representation of geospatial data.
