A natural nanomaterial suspension-based sizing agent has been developed, resulting in improved interfacial and mechanical properties. The natural nanomaterial-dispersed sizing agent can be applied in a relatively simple manner, yet its sizing pick-up mechanism is different than the conventional sizing.

Description

There are multiple methods to improve the fiber-matrix interface, and all converge to improve the chemical and/or physical compatibility of the reinforcement with the fiber. Out of these, sizing is one of the popular methods and exploits molecular interaction to bridge the fiber-matrix chemical disparity. In this invention, a third yet simple phase comprising natural nanomaterial was introduced to leverage the interfacial stiffening to improve on the interfacial strength vis-à-vis mechanical performance. The natural nanomaterial acts as a compatibilizing phase at the interface and improves the performance properties, such as mechanical and thermomechanical properties of composites. It was also noticed that this natural nanomaterial dispersion/sizing agent can be used in multiple process such as sheet molding compound, carbon/glass fiber tapes, prepregs where the processing temperature is below 240 degrees Celsius. It was noticed that the application of the natural nanomaterial-based sizing can improve the handling of carbon fiber and generates relatively lower fuss.
