Among the methods for point source carbon capture, the absorption of CO2 using aqueous amines (namely MEA) from the post-combustion gas stream is currently considered the most promising. Nonetheless, the energy demand for solvent regeneration remains a considerable hurdle to implementation. Biphasic solvents, which split into a CO2 rich and lean phase after absorption, offer considerable potential energy savings since only a fraction of the solvent volume needs to be regenerated. A novel biphasic solvent is proposed. Regeneration experiments performed with this new formula demonstrate potential energy savings of up to 40%, compared to the benchmark monophase absorbent, are attainable.
