Graduate Student Opportunities

Enhance your expertise and collaborate with many of the nation’s leading science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) experts as you complete your research. Opportunities are available for current master’s degree and PhD students to participate as members of research teams at ORNL. All internships come with a stipend.

US Department of Energy Programs

Program
DOE Office of Science Graduate Student Research Program (SCGSR)
2023 Solicitation 2 opens in August, 2023 and proposals are due in November, 2023

Eligibility:

JUMP into STEM

Eligibility:

  • Undergraduate or graduate student
  • US citizen or LPR
  • 3.0+ GPA

Commitment & Duration:

  • Summer: full-time 10 weeks

Program:

Innovation in Buildings Graduate Research Fellowship (IBuild)

Eligibility:

  • Enrolled or plan to enroll in master’s or doctorate program
  •  US citizen/LPR
  • 3.0+ GPA

Commitment & Duration:

  • 12 months full-time

ORNL Programs

Program:

Graduate Research Student Internships (GRSI) 
Spring 2024 applications due:   October 23rd 2023 at 11:59 PM EST

Eligibility:

  • Currently enrolled in master’s or doctoral degree program
  • Recent graduate (master’s)
  • US citizen or LPR 
  • 3.0+ GPA

Commitment & Duration:

  • Summer: full-time 10-12 weeks
  • Fall/spring: full-time or part time 16-20 weeks

Program:

Technical and Professional Internships (TPI)
Spring 2024 applications due:   October 23rd 2023 at 11:59 PM EST

Eligibility:

  • Currently enrolled in master’s or doctoral (Ph.D or J.D) degree program
  • Recent graduate (master’s)
  • US citizen or LPR
  • 3.0+ GPA

Commitment & Duration:

  • Summer: full-time 10 weeks
  • Fall/spring: full-time or part-time 16-20 weeks

Program:

The GEM Fellow Internship Program at ORNL (GEM)
Summer 2024 applications due November 15th, 2023

Eligibility:

  • Selected GEM fellows (enrolled or plan to enroll in master’s or doctoral degree program)
  • US citizen or LPR
  • 3.0+ GPA

Commitment & Duration:

  • Summer: full-time 10-12 weeks

Program:

Graduate Research at ORNL (GRO)

Eligibility:

  • Currently enrolled in a doctoral degree program
  • 3.0+ GPA
  • Required graduate coursework

Commitment & Duration:

  • Full-time 3-12 months

Program:

National School on Neutron and X-ray Scattering
